What's that?: Negro Leagues art exhibit opens at McNichols Civic Center

DENVER – As MLB All-Star Game week events wrap up, an art exhibit inspired by the Negro Leagues will remain open for several more weeks. President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum Bob Kendrick said the exhibit features 35 original works of art created by 28 diverse artists from all over the United States. One of the featured artists, Elijah Minton, also known as the Art Alchemist, said he enjoyed taking part in this year's festival.

I painted the entire pandemic to be honest...but as a whole, it’s nice to see everybody coming along and joining me now,” Minton said.

MAPLEWOOD ARTS AND CULTURE FALL 2020

Inspired by the theme "Our Community Looking Forward" Elijah Minton used his memories and experiences working in Maplewood as a young teen. He was struck by the diversity of the community and, just as much, by how the community works together to lift all people, of all backgrounds and races to a better future.

Known as the Art Alchemist, Elijah Minton came here to do what he loves, which is to create art. He is a full time artist dedicated to working at his craft daily since 2014. His goal is to paint as big as possible and inspire others to chase their dreams along the way.

The Art Alchemist is a New Jersey based artist who has made a name out of skillfully spray-painting murals around the country. His art stands somewhere between surrealism and abstraction with a warped style, that features twisted perspectives and a wide range of vibrant hues.

As a college senior majoring in Finance & Marketing at Montclair State University, he dropped out to pursue a career in art. After dropping out, Elijah taught himself how to paint, illustrate, and operate a business. He has since founded 50 Shades of Hue LLC, an art and mural production agency .

i am

I am Elijah Minton, the Art Alchemist. I strongly believe in the importance of honoring myself by sharing what I love most. Art. I’ve made many sacrifices to reach this point in my career, but it’s the adversity which I faced along the way that has shaped my art as well as who I am today . I am very grateful for the rapid pace of growth I’ve been experiencing since I picked up a spray paint can 4 years ago. I can only imagine how much further i’ll go in the next 7 years!
